How the Numbers Work
Watch time is the runtime divided by the speed. A 60 minute video at 1.5x is 60 / 1.5 = 40 minutes. Time saved is what is left over, so 20 minutes in this case. That is the whole calculation, which is why it can run while you type.
The saving does not grow evenly with the speed number. Moving from 1x to 1.5x removes a third of your seat time. Moving from 1.5x to 2x removes only a sixth more. Most of the benefit arrives early, which is worth knowing before pushing dense material to 2x and rewinding half of it.
Speed changes nothing except your seat time. The video's runtime and a playlist's total duration stay exactly as they were, because the setting lives in your player and not in the file.
A 4 Hour Video at Each Speed
Four hours is a common length for a conference talk track or one section of a long course. Here is what each speed does to it.

Two more worth remembering: a 45 minute lecture takes 30 minutes at 1.5x, and a 10 hour course takes 6 hours 40 minutes at the same speed, which turns a full working day into an afternoon. Seconds are rounded down, so 1.75x lands on a value that is not round.
Doing This for a Whole Playlist
One video is easy arithmetic. A course playlist is not, because every runtime has to be added up before the division makes sense, and YouTube shows no total.

Playback Speed Questions
How long is a 4 hour video at 1.5x speed?
2 hours 40 minutes. Four hours is 240 minutes, and 240 / 1.5 = 160 minutes, so you save 1 hour 20 minutes. The same video takes 3 hours 12 minutes at 1.25x, about 2 hours 17 minutes at 1.75x, and exactly 2 hours at 2x.
How much time does 2x speed really save?
Exactly half, whatever the length: a 90 minute video takes 45 minutes, and a 12 hour course takes 6. Whether you keep half the content is a separate question. Comprehension tends to hold up on familiar material and slow speakers, and to fall away on dense or unfamiliar subjects, which is why many people run tutorials at 2x and new theory at 1.25x.
Can I watch faster than 2x on YouTube?
The YouTube player's own speed menu stops at 2x on the web and in the mobile apps. The calculator above accepts any number you type, which helps if you watch through a player that goes higher, or if you are planning around a podcast app that offers 2.5x or 3x.
Does playback speed change the video or only my watch time?
Only your watch time. The video's runtime and a playlist's total duration are unaffected, because the speed setting belongs to your player rather than to the file. That is why a playlist still reads 12 hours after you have finished it in 6.
